How Can This Be Happening?

Friday, January 12, 2018

When the angel of the Lord appeared to Mary announcing that she would conceive and give birth to a son, it was an absolute impossibility. Mary had not yet known a man — she was a virgin. Then how would this happen? And the angel said to Mary, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God" (Luke 1:35).

This scripture reveals three things the Holy Spirit did concerning Mary that brought this impossibility into the realm of possibility.

First, the Holy Spirit came upon Mary. Of course, the Holy Spirit dwells within us, but He can also come upon us. The only way the Holy Spirit can fully operate in our lives is when we spend quality time with Him. We must worship Him, commune with Him, listen to Him, and obey Him.

Intercession is God hearing our voice and moving on behalf of our words. Meditation is us hearing God's voice and moving on behalf of His words.

Second, the power of the Highest will overshadow you. That is meant to be an uninterrupted arrangement. Psalm 91:1 instructs us to "...abide under the shadow of the Almighty...." Abiding is something that is done all day and all night. Abiding under His influence will enable us to draw from the wisdom of God. Then, when we make decisions, we can be confident that we are following the leadership of our heavenly Father.

Third, Mary conceived and gave birth to the Word of God. When we were born again, the Word of God was planted, or conceived, in our spirits. Much in the same manner, the Word of God was conceived in the womb of Mary. John 1:14 tells us that Jesus is the Word made flesh. The more we plant the Word in our hearts, the more we will give birth to His promises in our lives.

All the miraculous power of God already resides within us. The problem has been that relatively few have ever given birth to or brought forth the Word that was conceived within them.

We must give birth to the Word which we have conceived. Many times the Word of God, or the seed planted, just lies dormant inside a Christian. Consequently, they seldom experience the power of God in answer to their prayers. However, Ephesians 3:20 gives great insight into this problem:

"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us."

We only receive from God according to the power that works in us. We can increase the power that is at work in us by spending time in the presence of the Lord. As we do, we should expect the Holy Spirit to come upon us and the power of the Most High to overshadow us.

Allow the seed of God's Word to be implanted in your heart. Your expectation will give birth to what you conceived.
