During the dangerous days in which we live, we must look to God and trust the magnificent promises He’s given us. Both Old and New Testaments are filled with scriptural promises of protection, but nowhere do we find promises more powerful than those in Psalm 91.
Every believer has a right to pray these promises and receive them by faith. This psalm contains God’s definitive word on the matter.
What a wonderful picture of protection that psalm presents!
It reveals God as our refuge, our fortress, and our covering. It depicts His Word as a shield that protects us from the arrows and missiles of our enemy. It shows His angels standing ready to go to work on our behalf to keep us safe.
God tells us in this psalm of the many ways He desires to keep us under the shadow of His protection. Three separate times Psalm 91 declares that God will deliver us! Each time it describes the deliverance coming in a different way. There is a progression in the words the palmist uses that parallels the growth in our Christian lives. He may not deliver us the way we expect Him to, but He will always be faithful to us. He’ll never leave us on our own.
The first time in Psalm 91 God tells us that He will deliver us is found in verse 3: “Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.”
The word deliver in this instance means to pluck up or snatch up out of trouble. It speaks of the kind of rescue that’s needed when someone gets caught in a trap. Think about how a wild animal can be caught unaware by a snare that’s been laid by a skilled hunter. It can wind up in trouble because it didn’t see the trap until it’s too late. Had the animal been watching, it might have seen and avoided the danger. But once ensnared, it’s helpless. It can’t get away. All it can do is wait for the trapper to come and finish the job.
As Christians, we sometimes find ourselves in the same kind of fix. Our enemy lays out his traps and then waits for us to walk into them and become helpless in his grip. So often we could have been more aware of the potential problems that awaited us, but for whatever reason, we weren’t. So we got caught.
There’s good news for us, however. God is still on our side. He doesn’t leave us to struggle through on our own. We still have a Deliverer! He will take hold of us when we put our faith in His Word and snatch us right out of the snare that has entrapped us.
Psalm 124:7-8 says, “Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers; The snare is broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, Who made heaven and earth” (NKJV).
Just as the bird caught in the snare must have help in order to escape, we too need help from Heaven to set us free from Satan’s grasp—and that help is ever available to us. It is found in the matchless Name of Jesus. Call on Him when you find yourself facing desperate times. He’ll answer you! He’ll pluck you up out of trouble and put you under the shadow of His wings where His peace reigns.
